Awamaki seeks a motivated and professional individual, based in our Peru office, who will lead sales for our fair trade women's cooperative products. This person will have significant leadership in the growth and direction of the program, and will work closely with our international team, including our designer, artisan coordinators, artisans and volunteers. This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative and experienced professional to maintain and further develop the voice and vision of a growing non-profit social enterprise working in a developing country. We will expect the successful candidate to be able to take initiative, collaborate well with his/her colleagues, and have excellent communication skills.

About Awamaki

Awamaki is an innovative non-profit social enterprise that works to help rural women's cooperatives start and run their own businesses making and selling knit accessories and woven textiles, bags and pillowcases. We offer skills trainings and market access so the women can earn an income and lift their families out of poverty. Awamaki is located in Ollantaytambo, a small town in the Sacred Valley in Cusco, Peru.


Job and Responsibilities:

The Director of WCP will either carry out the following or supervise skilled volunteers who do so:

Program Direction

  • Lead WCP team and staff in order to progress with program goals (depending on candidate).
  • Oversee all aspects of the WCP program (depending on candidate).
  • Oversee and make decisions regarding production of products (e.g. sewing, sourcing, quality control, handspun line, etc.) (depending on candidate).
  • Oversee creation of the Lookbook, line sheets, price sheets and other materials.
  • Work with WCP team to move all cooperatives towards business autonomy according to Awamaki's Impact Model.
  • Seek clients to connect directly with the cooperatives so they can build their businesses, and help cooperatives learn to manage independent client relationships.
  • Collaborate with WCP team to design skills trainings for the women to improve product quality and business skills.
  • Help shape overall program vision and goals.

Client relations and promotion

  • Coordinate with ED and Head Designer to fulfill international and custom order clients.
  • Manage in-country wholesale clients.
  • Manage Cusco and non-US market expansion and clients.
  • Check invoices for international and custom order clients.

Sales Fulfillment and Strategy

  • Work with U.S.-based team, including ED and Creative Director, to make strategic decision-making for wholesale line.
  • Calculate targets for pricing/volume to reach break even.
  • Update cost and pricing sheets for new products and materials; analyze cost sheets to ensure profitability of target prices.
  • Create item and colorway sales reports to help team make decisions on products and colors.
  • Manage order fulfillment for all orders.
    • Conduct final quality control check on wholesale orders.
    • Manage and fulfill all shipping.
    • Manage production calendar to estimate and make orders for future sales in order to prevent backorders.

Store Management

  • Manage store shifts calendar for both Ollantaytambo stores.
  • Train new employees and volunteers to work in the store.
  • Complete weekly inventory of both stores.
  • Manage POS system.
  • Decide and implement product sales and special offers.
  • Work with WCP team to order stock and keep store filled.
  • Oversee Ollantaytambo and online store display.
  • Open and close register Monday through Friday (or authorize replacement to do so).
  • Resolve any problems related to the store.
  • Review and manage store finances.
    • Oversee cash flow, visa transactions, etc.

Volunteer and Staff Management

  • Assigning appropriate work to volunteers and interns.
  • Overseeing volunteer and intern projects in a way that accomplishes the goals of WCP according to the volunteer's abilities.
  • Supervise other coordinators in WCP (Head Designer, Knitting and Weaving Cooperative Coordinators, Store Manager) (depending on candidate).


Skills & Qualifications


  • Degree in business, marketing, sales, textiles, design, or a related field.
  • Professional experience working in textiles, knitwear, fashion, and production is a plus.
  • Very strong expertise in business analysis; high level of comfort with Excel.
  • Previous retail experience, particularly store management.
  • Previous wholesale and customer relations experience.
  • Ability to manage a team of interns.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to multitask in Peru or a similar environment.
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, and excellent communication skills.
  • Previous experience living or working in Latin America a plus.
  • Advanced proficiency in English and Spanish.
